| Autism is a developmental disorder of brain function that typically appears in the first three years of life. Symptoms include impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual or severely limited activities and interests. The symptoms can range from mild to severe. Individuals with Autism often also have abnormal responses to sounds, touch, or other sensory stimulation. |

It remains unclear what causes autism; however, there are a number of theories, including the link between heredity, genetics and medical problems. It also appears that some children are born with a higher susceptibility to autism. Researchers are investigating problems during pregnancy or delivery, a possible link to vaccinations, as well as environmental factors such as viral infections and exposure to environmental chemicals.
